Working Mama Spotlight on Tonisha Jarrett
Where are you from: I was born in Hawaii and moved to Indiana when I was five years old. I have lived in Indiana since.
Where do you live now: Center Grove
Education: I completed my undergraduate degree at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. After taking a few years off, I began and graduated law school from Robert H. McKinney School of Law downtown Indianapolis.
Career: I am an attorney running my own law firm, Jarrett Law Office and have been practicing for 3.5 years. I handle all types of law but focus heavily on adoptions, family law and juvenile defense.
Family life: I am married to my husband Craig and have three kids. My oldest son is in 6th grade, my middle son is in kindergarten, and I have a 9 month old baby girl!
Favorite Indy Eats: We love Harry and Izzys and I actually served there for about five years throughout and after law school.
Favorite family fun spot/activity: My children are spaced out in age so finding one family spot that they all enjoy is difficult. Any type of arcade like area is always a hit.
Favorite "me-time" activity: Drinking a glass of wine and reading a book!
What are you reading right now? Case law..boring!
Best Mom Moment: Oh I fail daily as a mom. Today I forgot to pack one child's lunch and my oldest son wore a girl shirt to his choir concert because who knows where his shirt was!
Career Highlight(s): I started law school as a single mother and finished with two kids. I love practicing law and my "career" highlights would be all the adoptions I have been able to be apart of and see the excitement of the new parents and the children knowing that they have finally found a family!
What you love about being a Hoosier? Hoosier basketball, that we can find a good park and just simply play outside!
As a child, what did you want to be when you grow up? A pediatrician. Then I realized I couldn't see blood!
Where you want to be in 10 years? Successful in my career and still balancing motherhood.
Career/Parenting advice you would like to share with other working mamas: It is hard! I mess up everyday. I stress over every small detail every single day. I currently take my work bag and a breast pump to court daily. It is almost comical! I'm sure I'm not alone and as a mother-we need to stop being so hard on ourselves. Who cares if our kids eat poptarts for breakfast and not something homemade; it's okay if we forget to send in treats for a school party. Our kids love us. That's all that matters.
