Working Mama Spotlight on Tahwii Spicer
Where are you from: I was born in Indianapolis, IN, but grew up all over the country.
Where do you live now: I returned to Indianapolis, IN in high school and have been her since.
Education: I attended I.U. and IUPUI to become a nurse and even briefly attend The Art Institute of Indianapolis for digital photography before deciding to forge my own path. So I'm a college drop-out and proud of it.
Career: Previously, I was a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist. For almost a decade I ran sleep studies on patients and analyzed the data to look for sleep disorders. It was a boring job, but at least I had a three day weekend every week! Eventually, I became tired of the vampire hours and became certified as a doula. As a doula I owned a holistic maternity concierge and baby planning service called In Natural Harmony and worked part-time in a local baby retail store. In Natural Harmony has been featured in Pregnancy & Newborn Magazine, Holistic Parenting Magazine, and Fox 59 News.
After we had our son I decided I wanted a flexible career that allowed me to be with my son at all times. During my time as a doula and baby planner I specialized in catering to conscious parents, as a result I had a lot of knowledge about eco-friendly baby products. Naturally as I dissolved my doula business and the store I was working at was changing ownership it made sense for me to open my own shop.
Family life: I'm married to the best guy ever! Our daughter is 9 years old and our son is almost 2 years old.
Favorite Indy Eats: My husband and I can't get enough of Sangrita Saloon, they have the best tacos in town and the atmosphere is so cozy and fun. We also enjoy Canal Bistro, also in Broadripple, everything on the menu here is fantastic too.
Favorite family fun spot/activity: We like to walk around the neighborhood to the nearby store and grabbing snacks or walking on the monon and eating Brics ice cream.
Favorite "me-time" activity: I've always loved to pamper myself and promised that I would continue to make time for myself after my son was born. I treat myself to a weekly mani/pedi and schedule a 60 minute massage every few months.
What are you reading right now? Reading, what is that? I used to enjoy reading, but now it seems there aren't enough hours in a day. The last book I read was by Simon Sinek called, " Start With Why", I highly recommend it to any entrepreneur. Recently, I came out of the dark ages and bought an IPhone, so I'm going to give Podcasts a try while I pack orders, my first subscription was to Legal-Ease for Entrepreneurs with Art Steele.
Best Mom Moment: My best Mom moment was taking my son the ocean in Hawai'i for the first time, I knew in my heart he was going to be a water baby and sure enough I was right. I have never seen him so happy than when his toes are in the sand.
Career Highlight(s): The Eco Baby Co™ is an online retailer that specializes in carrying conscious essentials for mother & child, with an emphasis on being plastic and silicone free as much as possible. We have been featured in Eluxe Magazine, The world's first ever sustainable luxury publication.
What you love about being a Hoosier? I love that we're just easy going kind of folks.
As a child, what did you want to be when you grow up? As a child I just wanted to be successful and be my own boss, I never really had a concrete idea of what I wanted to do as an adult.
Where you want to be in 10 years? In 10 years I see at least one more child in the family, perhaps a dog, lots of stamps in our passports, and having The Eco Baby Co™ be at the forefront of changing the baby industry for the better.
My biggest mistake:My biggest mistake would be not following my instincts, there are several times that my instincts always knew best.
Career/Parenting advice you would like to share with other working mamas: My best advice would be to take lots of pictures and video, even when you think you already have enough. When times get tough and the kids are crazy, put a smile on your face and just get crazy with them.
