Working Mama Spotlight on Jennifer Spray
Where are you from: California/New Mexico
Where do you live now: Zionsville
Career: IT for Pacers Sports and Entertainment, been there 10 years this November
Family life: I am married to Adam, he is literally my best friend and just like me. We have three kids Zoe (16), Cristopher (13 in April), and Annabel(6 in June). We have one very old boxer named Sophie. Both Adam and I work full time, but I am usually the primary for all kid related things. Before and after work I run them to what ever activity they need to get to. My husband helps as best he can, but he has a terrible schedule. So I do most of the nonstop running around lol. Zoe does swimming, lacrosse, and Orchestra. Cris just tried out for track. And Anna is in gymnastics and piano lessons.
Favorite Indy Eats: I have a top 5 places to eat at the moment, most of them are kids friendly for obvious reasons 😊
- Bubs Burgers, for their food and outdoor seating
- Kabutos, for their sushi
- Don Gusto PJ, for their Tamales and queso
- Jaggers, for their green Chile cheese burger
- Rick's Boat Yard, for the food and atmosphere
Favorite family fun spot/activity: We love the huge pond behind our house, we can fish in it and it is calming. We also enjoy Lions park in Zionsville. It's a great park, and they host many family fun events, the atmosphere is awesome.
Favorite "me-time" activity: This is a rarity and usually consists of reading, Netflix, crocheting, or Starbucks and a pedicure. On occasion I do get to meet up with some amazing friends and hang out for a bit.
What are you reading right now? Ready Player one currently, I just started it. I have some half read books in my amazon library, mostly consist of Star Wars books. I also read a few tech magazines, and I am currently brushing up on how to use a Nikon digital camera.
Best Mom Moment: I have so many proud mom moments, but a specific best mom moment…. As a busy mom, or even just as a mom you always wonder are you doing good enough, are you really rocking the mom thing, etc…My best mom moment is seeing my kids grow up to be kind, smart, polite, considerate, respectful, and just good kids. It’s also when my kids at any age, especially the older ones to confide in me. Or they come to me with issues or to have real conversations. I got to be doing something right…right?
My kids are my life and a huge blessing, that in itself is a best mom moment
Career Highlight: I feel like I have started bottom up in my career here at PSE. With some wonderful managers who have mentored me and had faith in me, a lot of hard work, and some schedule mastering skills, I have grown so much as an employee. My promotion was definitely my career highlight.
What you love about being a Hoosier? I love the family and community feel. Indiana is a great place to raise kids and the cost of living is a bonus.
As a child, what did you want to be when you grow up? As long as I could remember I wanted to be a photographer for National Geographic. I took photography classes 4 years in high school and two into college. Somehow I swayed into the world of technology and never turned back.
Where you want to be in 10 years? I would love to say retired, but I will not be there yet lol. I hope to be in a higher manager role with in my current department.
My biggest mistake: Not saying, “No I can’t do that." I was very much a yes person at work, although I take some pride in that and its great that I am a team player, it was not working well for my family. I was stretched thin, stressed and had nothing left to give my kids. I had a wonderful conversation with my boss about this and it turns out saying no, because you just cant is not a bad thing. It does not make you a bad team mate either. It’s ok to say no. (If that makes sense)
