Working Mama Spotlight on Dr. Laura Juntgen
Where are you from: Born and raised in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Where do you live now: Westfield
Education: I received my undergraduate degree from DePauw University (Go Tigers)! I completed my dental school training at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Then I returned to Indiana to complete my pediatric residency at Indiana University / Riley Hospital for Children.
Career: I’m a pediatric dentist and business owner. I’ve been practicing dentistry for eight years, specifically pediatrics for six years. I’ve owned my business (Hamilton County Pediatric Dentistry) for four years.
Family life: My husband’s name is Dave. We met in middle school, dated a bit in high school, and then decided to marry in 2009! We have three kids: Elaine (5), Matthew (3), and Harvey (2). We also have two fur babies (Owen and Linus).
Favorite Indy Eats: Honestly, with three young kids we don’t get out much! We’re looking forward to exploring more restaurants on future date nights!
Favorite family fun spot/activity: We love to be outside, whether a park (Cool Creek is one of our favorites) or the backyard.
Favorite "me-time" activity: Prayer, meditation, and CrossFit. I need activities that help to clear my mind.
What are you reading right now? Let’s see… Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site and Pinkalicous. My kids have good taste!
Best Mom Moment: It’s the simple things that melt my heart. I’m not usually the parent that picks up the kids from daycare. When I have the chance, my favorite moment is when our eyes meet and my kids yell, “MOMMY!” That yell and gigantic hug makes my day.
Career Highlight(s): My career highlight has been the progression and growth of my office. I set out to open a very unique dental practice. My focus has been on service to my patients, my team, and my community. I always tell those around me, dentistry is just my platform. Yes, I fix teeth, but that’s not my job. My real job is to build strong, lasting relationships with my patient families, encourage the personal and professional growth of my team, and help my community thrive. Watching my office positively impact those around me has been amazing!
What you love about being a Hoosier? Honestly, I love the changing seasons here in Indiana.
As a child, what did you want to be when you grow up? A marine biologist. Didn’t we all want to be a marine biologist?! I also went through a long spell of wanting to be a vet. However, once my mom explained to me the “not so happy side” of veterinary medicine, I changed my mind.
Where you want to be in 10 years? I want to be working more efficiently, that is, reaching more patients within my office and community with more extra time for my family. I’ve made some big, difficult sacrifices with my time over the last five years, and I’m hoping to be more balanced in 10 years.
Career/Parenting advice you would like to share with other working mamas: Take it one day at a time and trust God. Honestly, balancing work and family is the most difficult balancing act in the world. When I’m at work, I worry about my family. When I’m with my family, I worry about work. There are so many thoughts in my mind at any given moment that I have to focus on the here and now. Don’t worry about tomorrow, it will come soon enough. Put your energy in the moment and enjoy it. Live and love every second!
